Milford, meanwhile, has invested significant money and resources in recent years on improving the Mispillion Riverwalk Park, which straddles the Mispillion River — the dividing line between Kent and Sussex counties and the heart of its downtown. While Milford has been one of the fastest growing towns in Delaware over the last decade, most of its new residents have located in new neighborhoods at the edges of town.
Mayor Bryan Shupe estimated nearly $30 million in potential downtown development has been “sitting on the sidelines,” including restaurants, housing options and riverfront commercial properties.
“Each of those developers has expressed to me that the DDD designation would be the tipping point for them to green light those projects,” he said. “And while we’re developing downtown, we also want to make sure our residents are connected, possibly through the expansion of bicycle paths that lead to downtown from our neighborhoods.”
