Fellow Milfordian,

Along with Bayhealth CEO Terry Murphy and Governor Jack Markell, I am extremely proud to announce that Bayhealth will begin a new chapter in healthcare in Delaware. Expecting to break ground next year, Bayhealth will open an innovative new health campus in Milford to serve the growing needs of the people of Kent and Sussex Counties. Located just off of Route 1 adjacent to Wilkins and Cedar Creek Roads, the $250 million project will provide a state-of-the-art Inpatient Hospital, Emergency Services and Outpatient Services in addition to various specialists and diagnostic experts. Not only will this ensure that the residents of Milford are provided with the best possible care, it will make Milford a regional asset and destination for its surrounding communities. We are excited to work together to form a strong partnership as we write this wonderful new chapter for Milford and this region.

As we move forward, we want to celebrate and recognize the great work that has been accomplished by the people of Milford Memorial Hospital that has helped make this possible. They will remain an important part of this new era as we continue to enhance the health and well-being of this community.

A top priority for us all, the new health campus will offer the opportunity to make something very special out of the Clarke Avenue facility. Our team of community and state leaders is committed to partnering with Bayhealth toward this important goal through the participation of our business community. We want to keep the community informed of the progress of re-imagining this location. I was pleased to learn that Bayhealth is currently interviewing firms with an expertise in adaptive reuses of locations like the Clarke Avenue Facility. They have committed to selecting a firm by the end of 2014 and updates will be provided on a regular basis.

That effort, combined with the health campus project, can be a real catalyst for growth. When we look at the Milford Development Plan, we see how this campus, in the southern region of our city, can trigger economic development. More dollars from construction and quality health care jobs will be just the beginning. A modern health campus like this will attract employers and build momentum for further growth. It has the ability to attract and retain top health care talent which will ensure our families are in the care of the best hands in this region.

This is an exciting time for our community and I look forward to working with the residents of Milford to assist Bayhealth in building a health campus that will serve generations for decades to come.
