Bayhealth Breaks Ground on Southern Health Campus

“Today will be memorable for all of us. In a few years, when the health campus project is built, we can all say we were here when it all began. With one scoop of earth, we’ll begin a new phase of the town’s development.

For almost 20 years, Bayhealth has been part of Milford. Since the 1997 merger, Bayhealth has worked to expand healthcare within the region and provide our citizens with access to a wide array of services. Because of Bayhealth, Milford residents can get care they need right here in their neighborhood. Our retirees don’t have to travel to Baltimore or Philadelphia to get cancer care, orthopaedics, and rehabilitation services; these specialty services are just a short drive away. Our emergency patients can receive fast stabilization, and our new moms birth their babies and recover in the same room while keeping their families close. And Milford’s fantastic nursing staff earned Magnet designation for excellence in their field.

The next few years are extremely promising for our town and the surrounding areas because of the health campus. A new hospital and outpatient services will draw new physicians and nurses. They’ll have children who will attend our schools, buy homes and vehicles, and improve the town’s economic standing by leaps and bounds. Those who travel to our region for healthcare will use our gas stations, eat at local restaurants, and get their prescriptions filled at our pharmacies. In so many ways, the health campus project will serve as a wide-reaching catalyst for economic growth.

Like many of you, I want to know that the grounds of Milford Memorial will continue to be an asset to our town. To make this happen, Bayhealth enlisted development firm Trammell Crowe to plan for the adaptive reuse of the Clarke Avenue facility. I’m honored to be part of the professional planning team along with Milford City Manager Eric Norenberg and our colleagues at Arnett Muldrow & Associates, who have created the Downtown Milford Master Plan. The adaptive reuse plan will be done with great care and professionalism; honoring the site’s historic significance and enabling its continued use in a different form.”

Bayhealth broke ground on a health campus project today that will transform the way healthcare is delivered in southern Delaware. More than 200 community members, physicians, state and local leaders, and Bayhealth team members gathered to celebrate the milestone event.

Bayhealth President and CEO Terry Murphy, FACHE, spoke to the project’s scale and significance. “A project like this doesn’t happen overnight; it takes research, imagination, determination, and knowhow,” he said. “It also takes the will to change the status quo and create something new. We view the health campus project as a $275 to $300 million re-investment in the health of our community.”

The health campus is slated to open in 2019. The site – just off Route 1 – provides convenient patient access, and with more than 165 acres of land, the health campus will be able to grow and expand to meet the region’s future healthcare needs.

The health campus plan features a LEAN Led design focused on efficiency and the ultimate goal of improving the overall patient experience. Bayhealth team members and physicians are actively involved in the health campus plans, working side-by-side with design teams to make the best decisions for their future patients.

“This kind of expansion is critical to ensuring we are working toward the positive evolution of healthcare delivery, and health outcomes in Delaware,” said Governor Jack Markell. “Keeping the patient’s needs at the center of planning projects like this, helps us work toward a more efficient coordination of care, and I congratulate Bayhealth on this new campus.

“The campus will include a six-story hospital with an expanded emergency department, additional operating rooms, all private patient rooms, and a cafeteria on the first floor with outdoor seating. As this is more than a hospital, there will also be a 70,000 square foot outpatient center with additional services.

Nemours Children’s Health System will provide specialized services for children and older adults in a separate building on the health campus.

“Bayhealth has been a strong partner for Nemours and shares our commitment to improving the health of the communities we serve,” said Chief Executive, Delaware Valley Operations and Executive Vice President, Nemours Roy Proujansky, MD.

“We are honored to be part of this innovative health campus project and look forward to bringing comprehensive pediatric care even closer to home for many Delaware families.”
