Southern towns and cities leading Delaware in population increases
Milford Mayor Bryan Shupe, who earned the distinction last month of being elected the city’s youngest mayor, said they the municipality offers many business-friendly policies and incentives that have helped to shape a vibrant downtown. He decided to come back to his hometown to live after graduating from the University of Delaware in 2007.
“It was the right place for me. There was that sense of place, and that sense of community that you don’t find everywhere,” Shupe said.
The town is a mix of young and old, newcomers and longtimers, Shupe said. Some are buying existing homes, and others are building, something that’s increased after an economic downturn. The city’s proximity to Del. 1, which is getting a new overpass, has been a draw for larger businesses, he said.
The popularity of Milford is more than a one-year trend.
From 2010 to 2013 Milford grew about 5.6 percent, a percentage increase that was No. 2 in the state, according to U.S. Census population estimates.
