The Riverwalk “Freedom” Festival, which returns Friday and Saturday, has become a staple in the Milford community since its inception 14 years ago.

“Whether it’s Milford residents or people visiting from out of town, it’s a great opportunity to show off our town and all the recreation, shopping and dining experiences that are in downtown Milford,” Mayor Bryan Shupe said. “It’s a nice feeling of comradery and togetherness for the town.”

Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Milford, the event initially was founded as a way to pay tribute to the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“It’s important for us to remind ourselves not only of the responders but our military men and women and what they’re doing for us on a daily basis,” Shupe added.

In recent years, the festival has added Operation Giveback for veterans and their families to reach out to local services and get a little special treatment.

“Last year was such a success with fireworks on Friday and Operation Giveback, we didn’t want to change anything because it worked so well,” CCGM President Angela Dorey said. “We wanted to make it an evening in honor of them.”
While the festival traditionally pays tribute to servicemen and women, it’s become a tradition for the entire city and surrounding areas.

“I think that having these community events can really induce confidence and friendliness, especially in the downtown area,” she said.
