The first pieces of structural steel are in place on the site of Bayhealth’s new health campus project as full construction of the new $300 million hospital and outpatient center is underway in southern Delaware.
“This is an exciting milestone for Bayhealth. Over the past few years we’ve asked you to imagine a new way of healthcare for our community. Now you will be able to see the steel beams rise off of Route 1 as we watch our vision become a reality,” said Bayhealth President and CEO Terry Murphy, FACHE.
The placement of the first steel beam marks the next stage in the 440,000-square-foot hospital and outpatient center’s construction. Over the next few months the six-story frame of the project will take shape in Sussex County.
“The steel beams are a symbol of the many years of hard work it took to get to this point,” said Murphy. “Our trade partners have been on the site since last May preparing the land, securing the foundation and laying the groundwork for today and for many years to come.”
This is the first of many steel deliveries to the health campus by subcontractor Crystal Steel Inc., based in Delmar, Delaware. In total, 3,499 pieces of steel will be used to complete the project– that equals 5,497,696 pounds of steel.
Bayhealth’s new hospital will include expanded emergency services, cardiovascular services, additional operating rooms, and all private patient rooms. As this is more than a hospital, there will also be a 70,000 square foot outpatient center connected to the hospital with additional services. Nemours Children’s Health System will provide specialized services for children and older adults in a separate building on the health campus.
